The Saint Vladimir cathedral ( Volodymyr): orthodox Christian church of traditional Byzantine style church dating from 1882. To see for its magnificent Art mural.
The Golden door ( Zoloty Vorota): built in 1037 by Yaroslav the Wise, it was formerly the main entrance of the city.
The Krechtchatik boulevard : it is the main artery of the city, it winds on 1,5 km between both hills Chtchekavitsa and Khorevytsya. Closed to the traffic the weekend, it is the favourite place of the inhabitants to make shopping, meet itself and drink a glass. It comes out on the place of the Independence ( Maïdan Nezalejnosty).
The Independence Square ( Maïdan Nezalejnosty): an impressive column surmounted by an angel symbolizing the freedom replaced the statue of Lenin, destroyed in 1991. It was the key point of the orange revolution in 2004. Hyperfrequented in summer, numerous concerts are organized there.
The Saint Michel cathedral: this beautiful blue church is topped by seven gold-coloured domes. It was built in 1108 and completely destroyed on order of Stalin. It was identicaly reconstructed in 2001. It hosts a museum which recount all its history. In its left, is a discreet monument in the memory of the victims of the terrible famine orchestrated by Stalin and his henchmen in 1932-33.
By going towards The Saint Sophie cathedral, you will see the statues of princess Olga regent of Kiev from 945 to 964, surrounded by Saint Andrew and the two monks Cyril and Method, creators of the Cyrillic alphabet.
The Saint Sophie cathedral: brilliant of beauty outside and inside, its mosaics and its frescoes date from 1017-1031. Prince Yaroslav is buried there. The visit of this place is absolutely essential. The procedure will be supplied to you by our agency Ukraine - Découverte. At the right of the cathedral, you will see the statue of the hetman Cossack Bogdan Khmelnitski.
The Saint Andrew church: staying in Kiev in 1744, the empress Elisabeth Petrovna gave the order to build this church which was consecrated in 1767. Of baroque style, it hosts works of the Italian Rastrelli and the Russian Andropov.
The descent of Andrew (Andreevskiï spousk): numerous painters, sculptors, writers used to live there. The most famous of them, were Mikhaïl Boulgakov. He lived in the small house n°13 which is now a museum. Often compared with Montmartre, this very picturesque street is the address of numerous galleries of art, antique dealers and souvenir shops. Right at the bottom of the street, you will find yourselves in the heart of the oldest trading district of Kiev, the Podil.
The funicular: built in 1905, this charming small funicular will allow you to re-climb the hill, to find you in a park nearby the cathedral Saint Michel.
The house of chimeras: built in 1901- 02 by the architect Gorodetskiï and decorated with phantasmagorical figures by the Italian E.Sale, this house of Art nouveau style is rather disconcerting. Opposite is the presidential palace. The neightbourhood with its buildings with beautiful façades is pleasant to discover.
Monument of the Russian-Ukrainian friendship: visible since the place of the independence, this monument consists of a big arc in metal located on a panoramic viewpoint overhanging the Dnieper. The sight is magnificent.
The garden of the czar and the Mariinski palace: take advantage of the coolness of the park to admire this magnificent palace built in 1750 for Maria, the wife of Alexandre II. Regrettably the palace is not opened to the public and is reserved for the reception of the foreign delegations.
The statue of the Mother country (Rodina Mat) and the museum of the WW II: the impressive statue in titanium of 102 metres high overhangs the park of the eternal glory which hosts the museum of the second world war and the almost complete arsenal of the Soviet forces, as well as the bronzes glorifying the courage and the determination of the soldiers and the people facing up to the aggressor. If the elevator which is inside the statue is in service, it will take you at 92 metres high to the small platform in the shield of the statue for an unforgettable panorama of the city.
The Laura of Petchersk monastery (Kyiv Petcherska Lavra): this impressive religious complex, who extends on approximately 26 ha, consists of a set of churches topped by golden domes, including the catacombs where rest mummified mortal remains of some 165 monks, (among which those of Saint Antoine, founder of the monastery and Nestor the author of the chronicles of Kiev) the low Laura and the high Laura who hosts the magnificent museum of the historic treasures. The construction and the evolution of this great place of pilgrimage extends from the XIth to the XIXth century. A complete historic piece as well as a practical guide of visit will be supplied to you by our agency. Foresee at least half a day.
Hydropark: big leisure centre made up by islands on the Dnieper. Restaurants, bars, outdoor nightclubs, sandy beaches, collect the city-dwellers for barbecues between friends.
